The Orava Wedding
Małgorzata PolaczekOrava is a region situated in northern Slovakia and partially in southern Poland. It's been 2 years since I have a house there; it's a rebuilt Orava cottage (photo 1).
This year I have been invited to the wedding of my neighbor's daughter. I thought that because the bride studied in Cracow and the groom is an electrical engineer, their wedding will be like the ones you can see in American romantic comedies. However, I was positively surprised. The bride, who turns out to love her little homeland Orava, combined tradition with modernity and municipal elegance with folk customs. The groom came to his future wife's house accompanied by a folk band and bridesmaids dressed in traditional Orava costumes (photo 2 and 3).
The purpose of the witty songs sung by the band was to make the groom realize that these are his last moments of freedom and that he still can call off the wedding. The bride while leaving the family house was accompanied by the groomsmen who were also dressed in traditional Orava costumes (photo 4 and 5).
While entering the church the bride was escorted by the groomsmen and the groom by the bridesmaids (photo 6).
In the church the young couple was accompanied by 4 bridesmaids and 4 groomsmen (photo 7) as well as by the folk band.
WThe wedding with 200 guests lasted 2 for days. In the second day there was a party (poprawiny) during which the bride instead of her wedding dress wore tea gown and danced traditional dance with other young married women from her family (photo 8).
I had a chance to be a part of this wedding and I must say that I really liked the fact that young people still feel like continuing the regional traditions.
