Ludzie nie dlatego
przestają się bawić,
że się starzeją,
lecz starzeją się,
bo się przestają bawić.

My first travel abroad

Jadwiga Cwener

They say: "Where there's a will, there's a way"… For me in 1987 the biggest dream was to visit my son, who as a result of imposition of the martial law in 1981 emigrated to USA and I haven't seen him for many years. I applied for a passport and I got it after two years of waiting, but it turned out that this is just a first step on my way. The next step was to go to Warsaw to American Embassy and apply for a visa. It was said, that I would need a proof that I am not going to USA to work and earning money is not my main intension - I only wanted to visit my son. I needed to prove to Embassy's workers that I am a wealthy person. I worked as a teacher and my friends at work wanted to help me very badly and supported me anyway they could. At the pedagogical meeting at our school they took off all their jewellery, they put it into a plastic bag and gave me so I could show it at the Embassy as a sign of my wealth. As there were 54 people, mostly women, I had very heavy bag of their gold rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings. With that treasure and with other documents saying that I own a flat I went to Warsaw. I can't describe how scared I was to travel with these things. I had to go by the evening train, because to get to the Embassy you had to wait all night outside in a queue. By coincidence my train was full of people because of some local holiday. Finally I got to the Embassy and after all night at the queue I was able to enter it. I was very scared and stressed, because I didn't know what to expect and I was worried about my friends' jewellery (I was trying to hide it from people from the queue all night, because I was scared someone would steal it from me). At the entrance there was a gate with metal detectors. As I was passing it started to peep. Embassy's guards took my purse and took the bag with gold so everyone there could see it and took it to the deposit. I was so ashamed! After all these events that were so emotional for me I faced Embassy's official who in two words told me that I won't get a visa. I went back home and gave back the jewellery to its owners. Finally I visited my son, but after another year and not without many difficulties.
